What is the secret of Koshien Stadium, a sacred place for high school baseball in Japan?

Koshien Stadium is covered with the bright greenery of ivy. The leaves of the stems bathed in the sun are also full of vitality and welcome many baseball fans.

That's the green curtain.

The identity of the green curtain is the successors of the "Ivy" plant planted at the time of the establishment of the stadium in 1924. More than 400 ivy that once decorated the outer wall of Koshien Stadium were all worried about logging due to the renewal of Koshien Stadium, which started in 2006.

At the same time, in 2000, Ivy seeds were distributed to 4170 member schools of the High School Baseball Federation nationwide as part of the Koshien 20th Century Memorial Project. And among the ivy grown in various places and schools, seedlings with good growth were selected from 233 schools, and since 2008, they were replanted under the name of "Ivy's homecoming", which is the identity and story of the current "green curtain". Actually, "another selection" was held here as well.

When I met this "Ivy Story" on the news, I remember feeling something hot even though I was a child. Because he was a baseball boy. However, for those who come up with this kind of project, I really take my hat off. It's amazing, isn't it? I think it's wonderful to have a project that is more than enough significance to create stories and participate.

What is the other existence that will liven up baseball?

A heated battle that unfolds every year. In the stadium where the twilight where the baseball players and spectators have left during those two weeks, there are people who start working quietly from there.

These are the staff of Hanshin Horticulture Co., Ltd.

Of course you can manage the grass and ground in the stadium, but don't forget the management work of the "Ivy Wall" which is one of the features.

It seems that before the renewal of the stadium, it was taken care of vigorously with a large hand pot, but nowadays, the Ivy crawling on the wall with "wooden scissors" is carefully taken care of one by one. Awesome! Wow!

For the dead thick stems, we use pruning scissors, and we use them according to the choice of tools according to the location and environment.

It's the same in our workshop, but it's very important to choose tools, and each pair of scissors is a professional show. In the past article, I wrote about respect for professionals dealing with plants in the same industry.

I'm keenly aware that whether I can do this or not is the difference between professionals and amateurs. It's a wonderful thing!

The "green curtain" seen by us and the ball children is protected by the hands of craftsmen who spare no time and effort. Thank you!

Ivy plants are also used for moss balls.

In addition, it can be said that "vine plants" are also a good combination for appearance.

Let me introduce you a little bit.

Many vine plants such as Hatsuyuki Kazura, Golden Teika Kazura, Iwagarami and Akebi, etc. can make Japanese-style asymmetrical moss ball works by creating a flow in the figure.

The craftsmen of our workshop will put scissors in each moss ball introduced, and we will make works that you can appreciate by nurturing them for several months to several years. It's very steady and time-consuming, but if you try it, the pleasure of seeing growth is greater. I hope you will take a look.

A summary

Thank you for reading this article !

High school baseball players, thank you for your hard work in the long, long summer battle.

And thank you for the excitement!

By the way, the 233 schools that cooperated on the way back from the aforementioned ivy village have their name engraved on the inscription of the pillar of the lighting tower on the left stand.

I would like you to see it if you have a chance.

This time, I wrote an article about the plants and work that direct Koshien Stadium!

How was it?

It would be encouraging if we could hear your opinions with comments!

I have received permission to post it.
